About Ajuan Mance

Author of the Proud Legacy Book Project

Ajuan Maria Mance is a Professor in the English Department at Mills College in Oakland, CA. A 19th-century African American literature specialist, she holds the Mary Treat Morrison Chair in American History. She is the author of several articles on African American literature and literary history. Her book, Inventing Black Women: African American Women's Poetry and Self-Representation, 1877-2000, was named an Outstanding Academic Title for 2008 by the American Library Association.
